Top 7 Things That Make A Food Allergy Teen’s Life Easier

Being a teen with food allergies is challenging sometimes. We’re constantly on-the-go, and trying to balance school, sports, extracurriculars, our social lives and food allergies. It can be really tricky! So from one food allergy teen to another, here is a list of the Top 7 things that can make our food-allergic lives so much easier.

1. A “Chef’s Card”

What is it?

A chef’s card is a wallet-sized or larger card that lists your food allergies to help communicate your allergies to people you interact with, especially servers at restaurants.

Allergy Card in Englsih and Spanish
This is my card. It has English on one side and the Spanish translation on the other.

Using a chef’s card makes communicating your allergies significantly easier and more convenient. Gone are the days of telling the server each one of my seven food allergies and making sure that they wrote them all down correctly. Servers in restaurants are often relieved to see my card, and I’ve received compliments from chefs too. It makes communication easier, keeps me safe, and makes their job easier too.  Triple win!

Where can I find it?

My card was designed by a family friend (a graphic designer). Kortney designed her card herself – how amazing is that!

There are also lots of different websites where you can customize chef cards suited for your allergies. My favorite one is called Equal Eats: their creation process is flexible and straightforward, and they even have a cool app.

2. A carrying case for your allergy kit

What is it?

We all know that you need to have your epinephrine with you at all times, but let’s be honest – carrying around the plastic case is not the most appealing. Luckily, there are tons of choices for cute bags or cases to carry your meds. Here’s what I carry my adrenaline pen in:

My cases are labelled in case someone needs to find it for me.

An adrenaline pen carrying case is very convenient because, like many other teens with food allergies, I also need to carry an antihistamine. The case allows me to conveniently carry all of my medicines and instructions in one spot. It also fits well into other bags (like this popular handbag that’s the perfect size) with ease. I can just grab my entire allergy kit and go!

Where can I find it?

I keep my adrenaline pen in a personalized case from Etsy, which has a lot of options that are sized specifically for the Epipen or Auvi-Q.  I also love these cases from Pink&Gray – the little cross logo makes it clear but discreet that there’s medication in that bag.

3. Food Allergy Bracelet (or other identification)

What is it?

Food allergy bracelets or jewelry that have small, metal plaques attached that have your food allergies and/or other medical care instructions engraved into it.

It’s always a good idea to have something on you that indicates that you have a food allergy. If there ever was a time where you weren’t able to communicate that you were having an allergic reaction, having some form of food allergy identification could save your life.

Many people have recommended a brand called Lauren’s Hope – they create beautiful jewelry with a subtle, customizable metal plaque on it where you can inscribe your food allergies. Their jewelry looks like normal jewelry, I’d wear it even if I didn’t have food allergies! And, they even have products for males, which can be hard to find.

4. Food Transportation Carriers

What is it?

Having food allergies means having to bring your own food with you sometimes – whether that be to an event, school, or on a vacation – it’s always important and helpful to have a safe snack on hand, and an easy way to transport it.

Great food transportation carriers will make sure that your favorite safe options are just as delicious and fresh after they’ve been transported.

There are many different options out there, but personally, I love this Vera Bradley lunch bag. These bags are very popular at my school, and the patterns are so diverse and colorful. Plus, they even have a built-in ice pack pocket – perfect for perishables on the go.

For non-perishable snacks, I love to use these reusable storage bags. Not only do they transport food well and are easy to clean, but they’re also eco-friendly. And maybe it’s just me, but the sets are so aesthetically pleasing.

5. Cleaning Supplies

What is it?

No matter where I’m going, I always carry sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer in my bag.

It’s important for everyone to have clean hands and clean surfaces when they eat, but even more so for people with food allergies – it eliminates the risk of cross-contamination with something that you may have come in contact with. Plus, during a pandemic, it’s a must to have these on hand.

Where can I find it?

Typically, I use Wet Ones or Purell Wipes (travel packs) for wiping down tables, and Purell for sanitizing my hands (which can be a little tricky to find these days) Any pharmacy should have them, or you can always order online from Amazon.

6. Label Maker

What is it?

A label maker is just like what it sounds – you type the text that you want on a label, and it prints a label for you that you can stick on anything you’d like.

You might be wondering, how is a label maker a must-have for teens with food allergies?

Well, a label maker can be helpful to label foods in a cabinet or pantry to make sure that you can avoid your allergens. This is especially useful if you’re the only one in your family with allergies, or if you have family members with different food allergies. It can also be used to personalize certain dishware or kitchen tools to make sure that those items never come in contact with your food allergens. And not only is a label maker helpful for keeping you safe, it is also a fun thing to use in general. I like to print color-coded labels for my folders and notebooks for school.

Where can I find it?

I love this one – you can use different fonts, background colors, and borders on your labels to make them even cooler.

7. A Personalized Set of Kitchen Tools

What is it?

A set of kitchen tools that are for your use only. You can designate them in a variety of ways, like using stickers, or maybe even custom printed labels from your label maker, or get a color-coordinated set (like mine).

Here is my set of cooking tools.

If you have food allergies, chances are that you do a lot of cooking or prepare your own food often. To make this process more fun, purchase a set of matching kitchen equipment and tools that are all yours. This will also ensure that these cooking tools never touch any of your allergens, since you will be the only one using them. Why not bring some whimsy and fun into your kitchen?

Where can I find it?

You can get them all in the same color, or even buy personalized equipment with your name on it like these engraved spatulas. Cooking with your own special equipment will make your homemade meals even more special!

BONUS: Check out these awesome customizable waterproof stickers that are for food allergy warnings. They’re perfect for water bottles, phone cases, or even those reusable storage bags that I mentioned earlier.

I hope these must-haves inspire you to have fun and live the best food-allergic life that you can. Let me know what you think, and if you have anything else to add to the list, comment below.
