Smoked Salmon Caprese Salad is the ultimate travel meal. What I mean by ‘ultimate travel meal’ is that you can make it anywhere; all you need is a surface to make it on/in (paper plate or plastic container), a fork, and a knife. Smoked Salmon Caprese Salad is the meal I turn to whenever I need something quick to eat while travelling or if I’m out of the house.
Grabbing a bite to eat is not very easy to do with my set of food allergies. Most people can grab a sandwich or some crackers, but most of the time those are foods that may contain sesame or one of my allergens. So I have to turn to fresh ingredients like fruits, veggies, cheese, yoghurt, a can of tuna, or smoked salmon.
During my travels over the last year, I’ve continuously found myself making a variation of Caprese salad. The location may change from Paris to Melbourne, but you can always find the right fresh ingredients to make a filling, simple, and allergy friendly meal.
Smoked Salmon Caprese Salad: Not top 8 free
My go to allergy friendly meal isn’t top 8 free because I rely heavily on dairy products to keep me full while travelling. The base idea of an ultimate travel meal is for it be high in protein to ensure you stay energized for as long as possible. And to add a fresh element to keep you well… feeling fresh and of course, it adds a pop of flavor. Let’s be honest, when you’re travelling with food allergies convenience trumps taste, but if you can combine the two you have a winning combo!
Other proteins you can use instead of either the smoked salmon or the burrata/mozzarella are cold meats, hard boiled eggs, legumes, sunflower seeds, or tofu. Pretty much any protein that does’t need to be worked. Most of the ones recommended are readily available in grocery stores (at least in the countries I’ve been to). I suggest the base of your ultimate travel meal stays as tomatoes because their juiciness gives you a sort of ‘sauce’ that brings the dish together, this is especially important if you don’t have access to olive oil, or salt and pepper. If you can get your hands on some fresh herbs that will also help you increase the flavour palette.
The two keys to creating an ultimate travel meal are:
A) it contains fresh ingredients that don’t need any more prep than what a plastic knife can do.
B) you can make it anywhere, for instance, a hotel floor or sitting on a bench in Brussels.
When you think whole fresh ingredients that don’t need much prep, you can seriously rock any food allergy adventure. As long as you travel with a set of plastic cutlery and a plastic container all you have to do is put your imagination to work!Print
A super simple and fresh salad you can whip up anywhere, literally anywhere!
- Tomatoes – cherry tomatoes are the easiest for prep
- 1 ball of Mozerella or Buratta
- 100g of Smoked Salmon
- 5–7 Basil Leafs
- Good olive oil
- Finishing salt
- Cut your tomatoes in half.
- Place the mozzarella in the middle of the plate, disperse the cut tomatoes around the cheese. Break the smoked salmon into small pieces and scatter throughout the tomatoes. Tear the basil and sprinkle over the entire plate.
- Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a generous sprinkling of salt.
